ABOUT CECABLE:

CECABLE is an international research center that conducts and disseminates research on cable telecommunications, broadband, and related services.

Its mission is to provide an on-going analysis of the global technological revolution from social, humanistic, technical, and scientific perspectives.

CECABLE OBJECTIVES:

The main objective of CECABLE is to carry out research on cable and broadband technologies from a wide spectrum of perspectives. Its work is centered on the production of studies, essays, and other forms of documentation which address issues related to the development and implementation of these technologies.

The group links distinguished academics, researchers, and members of the business community throughout Spain interested in tracking, analyzing, and debating the development and implementation of cable and broadband technology (including HFC, FTTB and FTTH cable networks) in Catalonia, Spain, Europe, and the world. Unlike similar research centers in countries such as the United Stateswhich has a long tradition of generous public and private institutional supportCECABLE operates under a modest budget financed through private donations and government funding.

Companies involved in cable development and government entities charged with regulating and monitoring the implementation and commercial aspects of this technology are the principal direct beneficiaries of CECABLE’s research, activities, and resources. The general public benefits indirectly through the triple play (Internet, telecommunications, and television) or quadruple play (the aforementioned three technologies enhanced by mobility) services they enjoy as consumers.

THE HISTORY OF CECABLE:

The Cable Studies Center (CECABLE) began operating on October 2, 1995, in Terrassa (Barcelona), Spain, as a private, non-profit, organization offering services to both private enterprises and the general public. On January 31, 1997, the CECABLE Library was inaugurated and opened to the public. CECABLE has received the “Premi Rècord Català”, as well as various other awards, for its pioneering contribution to the field of cable communications, its local and regional public service, and its international outreach.

In addition to producing studies, articles, and publications, CECABLE has carried out numerous initiatives such as the Project Terrassa-Cable 2001 and offered a variety of courses and conference series related to cable communications. Group members have also actively participated in meetings with representatives of the multimedia industry convened by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Joan Francesc Fondevila Gascón, Director of the Cable Studies Center, has held professorships at various universities, including the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. He has received various awards for his scientific work and is the author of numerous books and indexed scientific articles. In 2005, Fondevila was honored with the “Gold Award” at the Primer Encuentro Internacional sobre Redes de Telecomunicación por Cable (First International Meeting on Cable Telecommunications Networks) held in Barcelona in recognition of his contributions as a global expert in cable and founder of the first center devoted to cable communication studies in the world. In March 2011, Fondevila received the Gold Medal of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU (UAO).

The Cable Studies Center also collaborates in local community cultural activities, working closely with the AFCT (Associació per al Foment Cultural de Terrassa). Joan Francesc Fondevila Gascón has prepared studies and authored several books, including El Centenari del Terrassa Futbol Club (1906-2006), which won the Llibre 10 Award and the Gold Medal, among other.
